About the studio
We mostly just look at stone and wood. A lot.
Gneiss & Grain is a small remote design studio in Lilburn, Georgia. We don't do big reveals or styled-shelf photos. We do the quiet, useful part: figuring out exactly what goes in your room, and writing it down so it can actually get built.
How we got here
A tape measure and a really blurry photo
The first Gneiss & Grain project was a friend's galley kitchen, designed entirely from six phone pictures and a sketch on the back of a pizza receipt. It worked. The contractor priced it in a day, and nobody had to drive anywhere.
That's the idea we kept. Most people don't need a designer in their house for six months. They need someone to make the dozens of small decisions, name them clearly, and hand over something a tile setter can read without calling anyone.
So that's all we do. Layouts, finish schedules, sourced fixtures, drawings. You get a flat fee up front, three invoices along the way, and the freedom to buy everything straight from the supplier.
“If a decision isn't written down with a code and a price, it's still a guess.”
What we care about
Four small opinions we won't budge on
Touch beats looks
Floors, counters, handles, the edge of the vanity. Spend your budget where your hands and feet go every day.
Nothing gets marked up
We don't resell anything. The schedule shows the supplier's price, so what you read is what you pay.
Plain words on the sheet
“Honed, 3 cm, eased edge” instead of “elegant surface.” Your contractor shouldn't need a translator.
Quiet rooms age well
We'll talk you out of a trend if it'll annoy you in five years. Gently. With samples.
